Etheridge's talents were apparent at an early age; She learned to play the guitar at eight-years-old and was invited to perform with several groups as a teenager before attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After lasting a few semesters, she decided she had the chops to pursue a music career and moved to Los Angeles. She was discovered and signed by Island Records who released her self-titled debut in 1988. The album was an underground hit that eventually became certified double-Platinum and earned her a Grammy nomination. She released her sophomore set, Brave and Crazy, in 1989 and toured extensively to develop a large and loyal fan-base. She earned her first Grammy for the effort and continued to tour extensively.

Etheridge returned in 1993 and recorded her massively successful Yes I Am album which addressed her sexuality and became the biggest record of her career. The album featured her signature single "I'm the Only One" and spent nearly three years on the Billboard 200. The album's second single, "Come to My Window", earned her another Grammy Award and Melissa Etheridge tour dates were scheduled nationally to promote her breakthrough album. Following the success, Etheridge released three more successful albums, - Your Little Secret (1995); Breakdown (1998); and Skin (2001). Etheridge continued to tour aggressively to satisfy her national fan-base.

The new millennium brought many more accolades and challenges for Etheridge. She released Lucky, in 2004 and was then diagnosed with breast cancer the following year. She became a staunch breast cancer awareness advocate and performed at several benefit concerts in support of cancer research and for the victims of the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. In 2007, Etheridge won an Academy Award for the song "I Need to Wake Up" for the film An Inconvenient Truth. The rocker lent her voice to the cause of global climate change and scheduled performances at both the Nobel Peace Prize Concert and Live Earth in 2007. Etheridge closed out the decade with Fearless Love and the accompanying Fearless Love Tour in 2010.

Etheridge's illustrious career continues to win her accolades and she continues to light up Rock and Adult Contemporary radio stations with her catalog of hits and new releases. In addition to being one of the most successful female singer-songwriters and performers of all time, she is also a humanitarian and has championed for many causes. Etheridge is currently in the studio working on her upcoming album, Icon, due out in 2011 and continues to tour extensively throughout the country.
